4Square are rightly referred to as “Manchester’s ferocious folk foursome”. They began with a fiery instrumental which allowed each member of the band to show their mettle.
Particularly notable in this talented band was Nichola Lyons’ energetic fiddling, remarkably she was able to keep up her jet fuelled pace through out the whole concert, even at the end of the concert having the energy to engage in some clog dancing.
A key aspect of their performance was the superb percussion led by Dan Day, highly inventive and to nanosecond precision.
Michael Giverin’s virtuosic mandolin and Jim Molyneux’s driving piano filled out the full sound of 4Square.
This is a band with an abundance of energy, with plenty to satisfy the folk aficionado.
